A secure Vault for your family's sensitive documents
Alongside your family's stories and photos, the Vault gives you a separate, more tightly guarded place for the documents you'd rather not leave in a regular story or photo album.
What is the Chronickel Vault?
The Vault provides encrypted storage for sensitive personal documents — passports, wills, deeds, and similar official paperwork. It sits behind its own vault passphrase, separate from your regular account sign-in, so opening it is a deliberate, additional step.
Which plans include the Vault?
The Vault is included on Family and Legacy plans. It is not available on the free plan. Time Capsules, by contrast, are included on every plan — see plans and pricing for the full comparison.
Who in your family can access it?
- Viewers and above can open and view Vault documents.
- Editors and above can upload new documents.
- Only the family space Owner can set up the Vault, change its passphrase, or reset it — since the passphrase is a shared family secret, but who controls it isn't.
- The Friend role (public/shared-story access only) never sees the Vault.
How does Chronickel protect sensitive documents?
Vault documents are encrypted, with the encryption key derived from the vault passphrase your family sets — not from your regular account password. For the full picture of what Chronickel does and doesn't confirm about its security posture, see the Security page.
Good to know
Vault documents are separate from your offline archive export — export covers your stories, family tree, and time capsules, not Vault contents. If what you're after is a sealed message for someone to read on a future date, that's what Time Capsules are for.
